| The institute was established in August 1988, during the birth centenary year of Bharat Ratna Pt. | The institute has a decentralized set-up, with its headquarters at Kosi-[[Katarmal]], [[Almora]], and as of August 2023, six other regional centres. At Almora, the research and development activities of the institute at are organised among four thematic centres located there. These are the Centre for Land & Water Resource Management; the Centre for Socio-Economic & Development; the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation & Management, and the Centre for Environmental Assessment & Climate Change.<ref name=":0" />
