| Shyam Kumar had approached music composer [[Anirudh Ravichander]] hoping to cast him in the lead role for the film in late 2013. After listening to the script and liking the concept, Anirudh turned down the offer on making his acting debut, but instead he agreed to compose the film's music. The director then cast newcomer Geethan Britto and Tulika Gupta along with [[Arjunan (actor)|Arjunan]] and [[Swaminathan]] to play significant roles in the film.<ref name=":0" /> The film's title ''Aakko'' was announced during the time of production, noting that the title ''Aakko'' is slang for the term "Aarva Kolaaru", which translates into "enthusiastic youngster".
