The 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be the 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a quadrennial One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament contested by men's national teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is scheduled to be hosted in India from 5 October to 19 November 2023. It was originally scheduled to take place from February to March 2023, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ten teams will participate in the tournament, including the 2019 defending champions, England. It will be the first men's Cricket World Cup to be hosted solely by India, who with other countries on the Indian subcontinent had co-hosted the event in 1987, 1996, and 2011.

The final is scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 19 November 2023. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Eden Gardens, Kolkata will host the two semifinals.

Format

The tournament will feature 10 teams, and follow the same format as the 2019 edition, with a round-robin stage followed by a semi-final and final.[1]

Background

Originally, the competition was to be played from 9 February to 26 March 2023.[2][3] In July 2020 it was announced that that the tournament would be moved to October and November as a result of the qualification schedule being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4][5] The ICC released the tournament schedule on 27 June 2023.[6][7]

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the competition after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send a team to the 2023 Asia Cup scheduled in Pakistan.[8][9] This issue was resolved in June 2023 after the Asian Cricket Council announced that the competition would be hosted using a hybrid model proposed by the PCB, with nine of the 13 matches in the competition played in Sri Lanka.[10][11]

Like the previous World Cup, the tournament will feature 10 teams. The main route for qualification was, however, through the new ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, a series of matches played between 2020 and 2023 rather than the ODI rankings.[12] The top eight of the 13 sides in the Super League qualified for the World Cup automatically, although as hosts India, who finished fourth, were guaranteed a place. In June and July 2023, the bottom five teams from the Super League and the top five ranked associate sides competed in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier for the remaining two places.[13][14]

As a result of the qualifying process, the competition will be the first not to include former winners West Indies, who failed to progress from the qualifying process after their defeat to Scotland. Full members Ireland and Zimbabwe also missed out on qualification, meaning three of the four full members who took part in the knock-out qualification stage did not qualify, with only Sri Lanka progressing.[15] The final qualification spot fell to an eliminator between associate members, Scotland and Netherlands.[16] The Netherlands won the eliminator and took the final spot in the finals stage of the competition.[17]

Trophy Tour

The International Cricket Council announced the trophy tour of 2023 Cricket World Cup on 26 June 2023 before 100 days to the start of the event. The Tour was launched with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Trophy being launched 120,000 feet (37 km) into the stratosphere by balloon, before making a landing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Photos of the trophy were taken by multiple cameras at the apex of its flight. The trophy then toured numerous countries before returning to the host country on 4 September 2023.[18]

Venues

The tournament will take place in ten different stadiums across India. The first and second semi-finals will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata respectively, while the final will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.[6]

The BCCI provided funding for renovations and refurbishments at stadiums. Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium received a new grass surface, drainage system, seating, and hospitality boxes. Wankhede Stadium had upgrades to the outfield, floodlights, corporate boxes, and toilets. M. A. Chidambaram Stadium installed new floodlights and relaid two wickets.[19]

Mascot

ICC officially announced the mascots for the World Cup on August 19; following the announcement, there was also an event held in Gurugram, Delhi, with two U-19 World Cup-winning captains, Shafali Verma and Yash Dhull. The mascots will be a male and female duo from the fictional cricketing utopia called Crictoverse. It also represents unique features and also symbolizes both gender equality and gender diversity.[29]

Prize money

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the winner of the World Cup will receive a prize money of US$4 million and the runner-up will get $2 million. Losing semifinalists will each receive $800,000 each.[32] This is exactly the same as the prize money at the 2019 event. The total prize money allocated for the tournament is $10 million. Each team will receive money based on their performance in the tournament as follows:[33]

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on 4 October 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a day before the opening match between England and New Zealand.[34]

Warm-up matches

Warm-up matches will be held from 29 September to 3 October 2023 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati, and Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.[6]

India's warm-up fixtures were announced on 27 June. The complete warm-up fixtures were announced on 23 August.[35] The matches will be broadcast live on television.[36][37]

The ICC announced the World Cup schedule on 27 June 2023 at an event in Mumbai with a countdown of 100 days to the opening match of the World Cup on 5 October. The group stage will begin with the match between the finalists of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand and England, at Narendra Modi Stadium.[6] On 9 August 2023, nine fixtures, including the match between India and Pakistan, were rescheduled by the ICC.[38]

In contrast, tickets are available on reselling platforms, where many people are re-selling them in lakhs of rupees. Many fans said that, when they entered in the Book My Show portal for ticket booking, it placed them in queue for 2 to 5 hours and those who reached to the seat selection page, were not able to book the ticket, many alleged that the tickets were sold out before the official booking was started. Due to the outrage of fans, BCCI announced that they would make 400,000 tickets available for the tournament.[41][42][43] On 8 September 2023, once again Book My Show sold tickets but similar things happened, many waited for 2-3 hours on the apk but didn't got single ticket. India's ex international player Venkatesh Prasad criticized the ticket selling platform and the BCCI, he tweeted "This doesn't look good. Either the ticket partners are incompetent to handle the ticket and traffic or this is another eyewash in the name of releasing tickets. Hope there is a proper audit and identification of how the tickets are sold and to whom and what platform." he said the ticketing portal a mess, it is incompetent, its ticket selling process is non- transparent, it will encourage black marketeers.[44][45]
