The 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be the 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a quadrennial One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament contested by men's national teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is scheduled to be hosted by India from 5 October to 19 November 2023.
10 teams will participate in the tournament, including the 2019 defending champions, England. It will be the first Men's Cricket World Cup to be hosted solely by India, who with other countries on the Indian subcontinent, had co-hosted the event in 1987, 1996, and 2011.
The final is scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 19 November 2023. Mumbai and Kolkata will host the two semifinals. The tagline of this edition is "It takes one day".
Background
Originally, the World Cup was to be played from 9 February to 26 March 2023.[1][2] However, it was announced in July 2020 that the tournament would be moved to October and November as a result of the qualification schedule being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3][4] In March 2023, ESPNcricinfo reported that the tournament was expected to be played from 5 October to 19 November.[5] ICC released the tournament schedule on 27 June.[6][7]
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the World Cup after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send its team to the 2023 Asia Cup scheduled in Pakistan.[8][9] On 15 June 2023, the Asian Cricket Council announced that 2023 Asia Cup will be hosted in a hybrid model as proposed by PCB.[10][11] However, before the announcement of schedule of 2023 Asia Cup, former PCB chairman Najam Sethi expressed his unwillingness to play any group league matches at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad except the knockout matches, subject to clearance from the Government of Pakistan. He also wished to have all their games played in Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata.[12]
In July 2023, there were arising tensions about the participation of Pakistan national cricket team in India.[13] If Pakistan doesn't participate, they would be replaced with Scotland, who finished third in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Qualification
Like the previous World Cup, the tournament will feature 10 teams, but the main route for qualification was through the new ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (matches played 2020-2023) rather than the ODI rankings.[14]
The top 8 of 13 sides in the Super League qualified for the World Cup, although as hosts India (who finished sixth) were guaranteed a place in the tournament. In June and July 2023, the bottom 5 teams from the Super League and 5 associate sides competed in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier for the remaining 2 places.[15][16]
This will be the first World Cup not to include former winners West Indies, who failed to progress from the Qualifier after their defeat to Scotland. Full members Ireland and Zimbabwe also missed out on qualification, meaning three of the four full members who took part in the Qualifier did not qualify, while the final qualification spot fell to an eliminator between the two leading associates, who were Scotland and Netherlands.[17]
Sri Lanka were the first team to qualify for the World Cup through the Qualifier.[18] Sri Lanka were designated as Qualifier 2 irrespective of their finishing place in the Qualifier.[19] Netherlands were the second team to qualify through the Qualifier after they defeated fellow associate member Scotland.[20] They were the only non-Test playing nation to qualify for the World Cup, and they were designated as Qualifier 1.[citation needed]

Venues
The tournament will be played in 10 stadiums across 10 different cities in India. The venues for the 1st and 2nd semi-finals are Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Eden Gardens, Kolkata respectively. Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the final.[6]

Upgrading of World Cup stadiums
Template:Importance section The BCCI will grant ₹50 crore each to the World Cup venues for upgrading of the facilities. Before the grant, upgrade work had already started at some stadiums. At the [[Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium], grass has been replaced with imported Ryegrass–Paspalum grass, upgraded drainage facilities of the ground and coloured the stadium, at the Wankhede Stadium the outfield has been relaid, LED floodlights upgraded, corporate boxes and toilets. Maharashtra Cricket Association's president Rohit Pawar expressed that they will upgrade their Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium by replacing damaged seats, will improve roads, parking and toilets, as well as discussing adding a roof to some stands because three-quarters of the stadium is open. At Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai new floodlight has been installed, and two red soil wickets have been relaid, at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium wickets have been re-laid.[30]

Warm-up match fixtures
India's warm-up fixtures were announced on 27 June. The ICC has announced a tentative schedule, but the final schedule is yet to be announced. The matches will be broadcast live on television.[34][35]
Group stage
The ICC announced the World Cup schedule on 27 June 2023 at an event in Mumbai with a countdown of 100 days to the opening match of the World Cup on 5 October. The group stage will begin with the match between the finalists of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand and England, at Narendra Modi Stadium.[6]

The ICC released the fixture details on 27 June 2023.[36]
Knockout stage
The ICC has stated that if Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals, they will play at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. If India qualifies for the semi-finals, they will play at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai unless India's opponent is Pakistan (the match will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in this case). All knockout games will have a reserve day.[37]

Broadcasting
Star Sports is the official broadcaster of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. They are scheduled to air the entire event in India and will stream for free on its service, Disney+ Hotstar. On terrestrial network, DD Sports will air only games involving India, the semifinals and the final.[34]
