Aaj Rang Hai often called Rang or Rung (meaning colour in Persian, as well as in Hindi and many other North Indian languages), is a Qawwali composed by Amir Khusro[1] in appreciation of Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya. It is a staple of most Qawwali sessions in North India and Pakistan, specially in the Chishti shrines of Delhi. Traditionally it is sung as a closing piece at the end of a Qawwali session.
The 1978 Indian film Junoon opens with a rendition of Khusrau's Aaj Rung Hai, and the film's plot sees the poem employed as a symbol of rebellion.[2]
In 2012,[3] prominent Pakistani singer Hadiqa Kiani performed a rendition of "Aaj Rang Hai" on season 5 of the Pakistani Coke Studio. Before his death, the renowned Qawwali singer Amjad Sabri performed it along with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Season Finale of Coke Studio 9. [4]
The qawwali is featured in the 2017 Indian Hindi-language film Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain, where it is sung by Jatinder Pal Singh, Sameer Naza, Mahesh Kumar Rao, and Mustafa with additional lyrics by Yogesh and music by Oni-Adil.[5]
