Santanu Bhattacharya, born on 23 April 1957 in the Indian state of [[West Bengal]], graduated in chemistry (BSc hons) from [[Calcutta University]] and continued at the university to complete his master's degree from [[Rajabazar Science College]] campus of [[University of Calcutta]].<ref name="Indian fellow" /> Moving to the US, he enrolled for his doctoral studies on bioorganic chemistry at the laboratory of Robert A.
