Jayasudha (born Sujatha; 17 December 1958) is an Indian actress and politician. She predominantly works in Telugu films along with Tamil films in addition to a few appearances in Malayalam, Hindi, and Kannada films. Jayasudha is a former MLA for the Congress in Secunderabad. She has received numerous accolades including eight state Nandi Awards of Andra Pradesh and seven Filmfare Awards South.[3]

Early life and career

Jayasudha was born as Sujatha.[4] She was born and brought up in Chennai which is her native place too.Her aunt is the Telugu film actress and director Vijaya Nirmala.

Personal life

Jayasudha is a granddaughter of eminent scholar and literary historian, Nidudavolu Venkatarao and Gidugu Krishna Murthy. She was initially married to famous cinema producer Vadde Ramesh's brother-in-law, Rajendra Prasad, in Vijayawada. However, the marriage ended in divorce.[5] Subsequently, she married producer Nitin Kapoor, cousin to actor Jeetendra, in 1985 and had two children, sons Nihar and Shreayan.

She has friends in the industry, such as Raadhika and Jayaprada, with whom she had acted in a number of films such as Adavi Ramudu and Meghasandesam.[6][7] She converted to Christianity in 2001 and was elected as MLA for Congress from the Secunderabad constituency in 2009 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections [8] but lost the election and was placed 3rd in the 2014 Telangana assembly elections.

Her husband Nitin Kapoor committed suicide by jumping from the top of a building on 14 March 2017.[9] It was stated that he was under depression since many years, but the actual reason for his suicide is not known.[10]
