Rao is a title and a surname native to India. It is used in Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh as RAJPUT

Telangana, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states it is used by all communities. In Goa it is used in some Gaud Saraswat Brahmin, Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin and Daivadnya Brahmin communities.  In Maharashtra it is used by Maratha and Kumbi castes . While in Karnataka the surname is associated with Brahmins, Gaud Saraswat Brahmins, Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins, Daivadnya Brahmin, Sthanika Brahmins and Madhwa Brahmins . but in Haryana and Rajasthan it is used by Rajput and Yadav people,due to superior in their places they are also called as Rao Sahab.
