Jamia Masjid, on the southern bank of the Thirumanimutharu River in the heart of the city, is Salem's oldest [[mosque]]. It was reportedly built by the [[Kingdom of Mysore]]  ruler [[Tipu Sultan]], who is said to have prayed here.
