He was a former Minister of Technical Educational & industrial Training in the Punjab government.On 19 September 2021, he became Chief Minister of Punjab after resignation of Amarinder Singh.[2] He is the MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly Constituency. Previously, he was the leader of opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2015 to 2016. Earlier, he was accused of sending lewd messages to a female IAS officer under Me Too movement.[3] He succeeded Sunil Jakhar and was succeeded by H. S. Phoolka.
