Abbas–Mustan is an Indian film director, film producer & writer duo which was created by brothers Abbas Alibhai Burmawalla & Mustan Alibhai Burmawalla, known for directing stylish suspense, action and romantic thrillers in Bollywood with dark-lighted themes.[1] The duo directed Bollywood films like Khiladi, Baazigar, Soldier, Ajnabee, Baadshah, Aitraaz, Humraaz, 36 China Town, Race, Race 2 and comedian Kapil Sharma's debut movie Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon.In 2021, they entered the Online Space with Penthouse which will release on Netflix. They have prominently worked with production houses like Venus Worldwide Entertainment, Mukta Arts and Tips Films.
History
The duo began their career with Gujarati films. In 1990, the duo made their Hindi directorial debut with the film Agneekaal, starring Raj Babbar, Jeetendra, Madhavi and Sonu Walia.
Early life and career
Abbas Burmawalla, Mustan Burmawalla, and their brother Hussain Burmawalla are from Surat in Gujarat state. Abbas–Mustan wanted to do something different from their family business of furniture, which led them to seek guidance from their Hindi film editor uncle, S.D. Kura, who advised them to undertake film editing to learn the craft and then progress to their goal of film direction. They joined Sultan Ahmed as assistant director who was directing the movie Ganga Ki Saugandh (1978). They later joined as assistant director with Govindbhai Patel to do several films. When Patel refused an opportunity to direct Gujarati film Sajan Tara Sambharana (1985), Abbas–Mustan received their first break to direct the movie, launching their career.
After Abbas–Mustan's film journey began as director, they initially stuck to directing Gujarati movies, before moving onto directing Hindi movies. Their first Hindi movie as directors was Agneekaal starring Jeetendra, Raj Babbar, and Madhavi in 1990. Since then, they have directed more than 14 Hindi movies. They eventually launched their own production house called Burmawalla Partners. In most of their films, name of the lead actor is Raj and lead actress is Priya.[citation needed] On 2020 both brothers revealed that they are working for Netflix untitled suspense thriller series.
Asian Academy of Film & Television honored both of them with the Life Membership of International Film And Television Club.
