Urali Gounder is the combinations of the words Ur ("land") and Ali ("ruler"), with the word "Gounder", which means "protector of the country".[1]
The Urali Gounder caste (BC/OBC) is a sub-caste of Gounder community found in the southern and western regions of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Manapparai, in Tiruchirapalli, and also Viralimalai in Pudukottai, and in Dindigul, Coimbatore, Karur, Salem districts which makes them a powerful place for them.[2]
The Urali Gounder caste where also classified as a Forward Caste (General class) at the time of Indian independence but they successfully requested to be reclassified as a Backward Class in 1975 like the Kongu Vellalar Caste.[3]
