Mehsi is an important industrial, commercial, and transit town organized as a Nagar Parishad in the East Champaran district of Bihar, India. Historically referred to as the "Gateway of Champaran", it serves as a critical entry point into the Champaran region from Muzaffarpur.

The town functions as a major regional service centre for surrounding settlements including Madhuban, Chakia, Tetaria, Salempur, Minapur, Sahebganj, Motipur, Barji, and Parsouninath through its well-connected markets, commercial networks, and transport linkages.

History

Mehsi holds profound significance in the history of the Indian independence movement. On 15 April 1917, Mahatma Gandhi arrived in the Champaran region for the historic Champaran Satyagraha. He received a massive public welcome at the Mehsi railway station before proceeding towards Motihari.

Geography

Mehsi is geographically situated on the banks of the Budhi Gandak River at coordinates 26°21′28″N 85°06′48″E / 26.357696°N 85.113300°E / 26.357696; 85.113300. It is located approximately 41 km southeast of the district headquarters, Motihari, directly on the border of East Champaran and Muzaffarpur districts. The town is bordered by rich agricultural plains, the regional Bhimalpur forest reserve, and extensive horticulture belts.

Economy and Industry

The town is an economic hub in North Bihar, driven by small-scale manufacturing and agricultural trade.

  • Mehsi Pearl Button Industry: Established in 1905 by Rai Sahab Bhulawan Lal, an enterprising Sub-Inspector of Schools, the industry began handcrafting buttons from oyster shells sourced from the Sikrahna (Budhi Gandak) River. The first major manufacturing unit, the Tirhut Moon Button Factory, was incorporated in 1908 with machinery imported from Japan. The Government of Bihar recognizes the Mehsi Shell Button Cluster as India's only dedicated indigenous pearl and oyster shell button cluster.
