| Parry joined the Royal Navy 1905 and served in the [[First World War]].<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/locreg/PARRY3.shtml Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives]</ref> He was appointed Officer in charge of the Anti-Submarine Establishment at [[Portland Harbour|Portland]] in 1936.<ref name=lh/> In 1938 he attended the [[Royal College of Defence Studies|Imperial Defence College]].<ref name="Officers of the Royal Navy" />

| During the [[Second World War]], he served as Commander-in-Chief of the [[New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy|New Zealand Division]] commanding {{HMNZS|Achilles|70|6}} at the [[Battle of the River Plate]] in December 1939.<ref name=lh/> In this battle he was wounded in the legs when shrapnel hit the bridge. He assumed command of {{HMS|Renown|1916|6}} in 1943.<ref name=lh/> He took part in the [[Normandy landings]] and served on the staff of Allied Naval Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force in 1944.<ref name=lh/> After the war he became Deputy Head of the Naval Division at the [[Allied Commission|Allied Control Commission]] in Germany.<ref name=lh/> Parry became [[Naval Intelligence Division (United Kingdom)|Director of Naval Intelligence]] in July 1946 and [[Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy|Chief of Naval Staff]] (Commander-in-Chief) of the [[Royal Indian Navy]] in August 1948.<ref name=lh/> He was advanced to [[Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath]] in the 1950 [[New Year Honours]]<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38799|supp=y|page=39|date=30 December 1949}}</ref> before retiring in 1951.<ref name=lh/>
