Note: The incumbent party [[Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam|MDMK]] did not contest this seat in 2004. Instead it was contested by its [[United Progressive Alliance]] coalition partner [[Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam|DMK]], who won the seat. Thus, the [[National Democratic Alliance (India)|NDA]], lost the seat, since MDMK left the NDA, and joined the [[United Progressive Alliance|UPA]], who held the seat. [[Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam|DMK]] had not contested this seat in the previous [[1999 Indian general election|1999 elections]].
