ITER, which stands for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (with "iter" meaning "the way" or "the path" in Latin), is a major international project focused on nuclear fusion research and engineering. Its goal is to generate energy via a fusion process akin to that occurring in the Sun. The facility is being constructed adjacent to the Cadarache site in southern France. Once the main reactor is completed and achieves its first plasma, expected around 2033–2034, ITER will become the largest of over 100 fusion reactors developed since the 1950s. It will have six times the plasma volume of JT-60SA, the largest tokamak currently in operation in Japan.
