In [[2006 West Bengal state assembly election|2006]]<ref name=vidhansabha2006/> and 2001<ref name=vidhansabha2001/> state assembly elections Asutosh Mukhopadhyay of [[Communist Party of India (Marxist)|CPI(M)]] won the 187 Bansberia assembly seat defeating his nearest rivals Suma Mukherjee and Tapan Dasgupta, both of [[All India Trinamool Congress|Trinamool Congress]] in respective years.
