As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Annamalai Nagar had a population of 8974. Males constitute 41% of the population and females 59%. Annamalai Nagar has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 41% of the males and 59% of females literate. 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The town is named after Annamalai Chettiar, an Indian businessperson, educationist and philanthropist. The Annamalai University, founded by him, is located in Annamalai Nagar.
Chidambaram is the nearest train station and bus terminus.
