The Legend of Maula Jatt is a 2022 action drama film in Punjabi, hailing from Pakistan. Directed by Bilal Lashari and penned by Nasir Adeeb, this film serves as both an adaptation and a soft reboot of the classic 1979 Lollywood film Maula Jatt. Produced by Ammara Hikmat and Asad Jamil Khan under the banners of Lashari Films and Encyclomedia, it draws inspiration from the characters and narratives created by Nasir Adeeb. The movie features Fawad Khan in the lead role of Maula Jatt, alongside a talented cast that includes Hamza Ali Abbasi, Humaima Malik, Faris Shafi, and Mahira Khan. The plot revolves around Maula Jatt, a local folk hero, who confronts his arch rival, Noori Natt, the ruthless leader of a vicious clan.

Production Journey and Key Milestones[edit]

Plans for Maula Jatt’s remake were first unveiled in December 2013 under director Bilal Lashari, with the screenplay finalised by 2014. The project gained momentum in November 2016 when producers Asad Jamil Khan and Ammara Hikmat teamed up, alongside lead stars Hamza Ali Abbasi and Fawad Khan. Shooting commenced in January 2017 and wrapped up by June 2019.

Challenges and Release Timeline[edit]

Initially slated for a 2019–2020 release, the film encountered repeated delays owing to legal complications over copyrights and the global pandemic. With an unprecedented budget, it holds the distinction of being Pakistan’s costliest cinematic venture. Distributors AAA Motion Pictures, Geo Films, and Mandiwala Entertainment spearheaded its release, while Sarmad Ghafoor handled the musical arrangements.

Critical and Commercial Success[edit]

After premiering at Lahore’s Cue Cinemas on 12th October 2022, The Legend of Maula Jatt hit theatres worldwide the following day. It earned acclaim for its gripping narrative, stellar performances, high-octane action, and cutting-edge visual effects. The film raked in approximately 115 crore Rs.  ($13.8 million) globally, setting new benchmarks as the highest-grossing Pakistani and Punjabi-language film ever.

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

The Legend of Maula Jatt, made on a budget of around 45 crores Rs. , became a monumental box-office success by 13 December 2022. In Pakistan alone, it grossed approximately 115.02 crore Rs.  (US$4.0 million), while its international earnings reached PKR 160.8 crore Rs.  (US$5.6 million), bringing its worldwide total to 274.7 crore Rs.  (US$9.5 million). This broke several records, including becoming the highest-grossing Pakistani film in history, surpassing Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 (2018), as well as the highest-grossing Punjabi-language film ever. It also dominated as the top-performing South Asian film in the UK from 2018 until 2022 and was the first and only Pakistani film to cross the 100 crore Rs. , 150 crore Rs. , and 200 crore Rs.  marks globally—all within a single month—before eventually reaching 250 crore Rs. . The film opened with a historic worldwide collection of 51 crore Rs.  (US$2.3 million), nearly doubling Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2’s previous record of 25.02 crore Rs. . Additionally, it was the fastest Pakistani film to hit 20 crore Rs. , 30 crore Rs. , 40 crore Rs. , and 50 crore Rs. , achieving these milestones in just three to four days over its opening weekend.

Pakistan[edit]

The Legend of Maula Jatt set new benchmarks in Pakistan’s box-office history with its stellar opening weekend performance. It earned a staggering 11.30 crore Rs. , securing the second-highest opening weekend ever in the country—trailing only Avengers: Endgame (14.50 crore Rs. ) and surpassing previous records held by Sultan and Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. Additionally, it became the biggest opener of 2022 in Pakistan, outperforming other major releases like London Nahi Jaunga and Doctor Strange 2.[3]

The film debuted on Friday with a historic opening day collection of 4.5 crore Rs. , which included 1.75 crore Rs.  from Thursday night previews—the highest-ever single-day earnings in Pakistan at the time. The momentum continued over the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday adding 3.45 crore Rs.  and 3.35 crore Rs. , respectively, marking the highest Saturday and Sunday grosses in the country’s cinematic history.[4]
