Syed Abdullah Tariq (born 1953) is an Indian Islamic scholar and author, who established the World Organization of Religions and Knowledge, an international interfaith organization, based in India.

Early life and education[edit]

Syed Abdullah Tariq was born in 1953 in a Syed family in the city of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.[1][2] He received a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Aligarh Muslim University in 1974.[1] He was significantly influenced by Shams Naved Usmani, who had a thorough knowledge of Hindu scriptures.[3][4] Abdullah was Usmāni's chief disciple for six years until his death.[5]

Career[edit]

In 1987, Tariq formed the World Organisation of Religions & Knowledge (WORK) under the guidance of Shams Naved Usmani; with Tariq appointed its president.[6][7][5][4] The WORK promotes the unity among people by promoting the message of peace and harmony.[8] WORK has arranged relief programs such as the offering first aid, food, and evacuation services irrespective of communal affiliations.[7]

WORK was actively involved in earthquake relief activities in Gujarat and Kashmir in 2001 and 2005 respectively.[7] It also assisted people during the 2002 riots of Gujarat.[7] In 2020, WORK volunteers undertook social work to help the economically challenged survive during the lockdown.[7] They even co-organized a peace procession with HWPL in Rampur in 2018.[9] WORK also commemorates Milad-un-Nabi as ‘Compassion Day’ every year.[10][11][12][13] A medical camp is organized annually by the NGO in partnership with Hind Bhaichara Samiti.[12] Hind Bhaichara Samiti president ‘Dhananjay Pathak’ encourages people to participate in this social welfare program.[12] Syed Abdullah Tariq stated that communities should celebrate this day by taking up social welfare work.[12]

Tariq created a platform for interfaith dialogue which, in 2020, condemned attacks on a Gurudwara in Nankana Sahab.[14] He has spoken in various Islamic and interfaith conferences and seminars in India and abroad.[15][16][1][17] He has also been invited as the chief guest to an exhibition held in the Durbar Hall of Rampur Raza Library.[18]

Views[edit]

India[edit]

Abdullah suggests that India is the land of the origin of Islam as the first prophet Adam descended there.[19] He refers to the country as ‘Punya Bhoomi’ which translates to Holy Land.[19] He also maintains that interfaith dialogue between Hindus and Muslims is crucial to uphold peace in India.[3]

Babri Masjid Dispute[edit]

In 1988 Syed Abdullah Tariq wrote an article for ‘Akhbar-e-Nau’ that discouraged the Muslim community from aggravating the Babri Masjid dispute.[19] He used the Quran and Sunnah to outline principles that instructed the community to refrain from taking the issue to the level of a clash.[19] He maintains that the issue has worsened because of the stance of the Muslim leadership. In 2018, he publicly supported Salman Hussain Nadvi’s stance on the dispute.[19][20][21]

Publications[edit]

Tariq's works include:[2]

  • Agar Ab Bhi Na Jaage Toh (Now or Never), This is a collection of the ideas of Shams Naved Usmani with a commentary by Tariq.[5][3][22] It encourages Muslims to view Sanatan Dharma in a different light.[5] It asserts that Hindus are the descendants of the people of Noah.[5]
  • Ekta Ka Aadhar
  • Gujarat Ke Baad Haalat Aur Hal and Yug Parivartan – Islamic Drishtikon.

Reception[edit]

Tariq was conferred with the Ramkinkar Award in 1992 by Ramayanam Trust Ayodhya.[23] In 2020, The Delhi Minorities Commission announced an award for him, for his contributions over promoting communal harmony.[24][25]

In 2012, an Islamic scholar, Syed Shahid Ali Rizvi demanded that Tariq be arrested for belittling the Quran.[26] Abdullah dismissed the allegations by clarifying his stance and unwavering faith on the Quran.[27]
