Sinicisation of Tibet

Sinicisation of Tibet [lower-alpha 1] refers to the initiatives and regulations implemented by the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) aimed at enforcing the Chinese culture in Tibetan regions. This includes not only the Tibet Autonomous Region but also other areas designated for Tibetans. These efforts are intended to transform Tibetan culture to align more closely with mainstream Chinese culture.

The alterations in Tibet, noticeable since its annexation by the People's Republic of China in 1950-51, have been supported by various economic, social, cultural, religious, and political changes introduced by the Chinese government. Critics highlight the state-sponsored influx of many Han Chinese into the Tibet Autonomous Region, referred to as Chinese settlements, as a significant aspect of sinicisation. Some scholars have characterised this as a type of Han settler colonialism.[1][2][3]

The Central Tibetan Administration, which represents the government of Tibet in exile, says that China's policies have led to the erosion of Tibetan cultural elements, referring to this as cultural genocide. They argue that these policies aim to integrate Tibet fully into China and suppress the aspiration for Tibetan self-determination. Both the 14th Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration have described the sinicisation efforts as forms of genocide or cultural cleansing.
