Overview[edit]
Published in conjunction with the exhibition "A Ramachandran: A Retrospective" at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, from December 2003 to January 2004, this two-volume set offers an in-depth analysis of one of India’s most esteemed artists. For over 40 years, A Ramachandran has continually pushed the boundaries of visual language.[4] His journey has taken him from sombre expressionism to a lyrical and metaphysical exploration of nature, incorporating various scales and mediums. This comprehensive book features over 500 reproductions and includes rare historical photographs, selected writings by the artist, biographical notes, and a chronology of his works.[5]
Book penultimate image of a multi-limbed figure, inscribed within a circle and a square, reflects a palimpsest of influences and provides insight into Ramachandran's art. The design evokes Leonardo's reinterpretation of the Vitruvian scheme, which symbolizes the cosmic design of the human figure.[6] Additionally, the outstretched hands and legs behind the wheel recall the imagery of the crucified Christ.[7]
