Its constitutional role includes expanding the options available to the people of Pakistan, covering news, current events, religious education, arts, culture, as well as science and technology. Following an order from the Supreme Court on June 28, 2018, Saleem Baig was appointed Chairman of PEMRA.

HistoryEdit

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was introduced by the government as part of a reform for an open media policy and was equipped with strong regulatory powers. The creation of PEMRA began in 2000 during President Musharraf's administration, through the establishment of the Regulatory Authority for Media Broadcast Organisations (RAMBO). Its mission was to enhance the quality of information, education, and entertainment; increase the media choices available to the people of Pakistan across various topics such as news, current affairs, religious knowledge, arts, culture, science, technology, economic development, social issues, music, sports, drama, and other matters of public interest; promote the devolution of responsibilities and authority to local communities by improving access to mass media; and ensure accountability, transparency, and good governance by facilitating the free flow of information.
