Nishith Gupta (born January 3, 1977) is an Indian molecular biologist known for his pioneering work in the field of Host–pathogen interaction and cell signalling.[1][2] He is currently the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at the Hyderabad campus of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Nishith Gupta was born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India. He pursued his early education at the Banaras Hindu University and later obtained his PhD in biochemistry from Universität Leipzig in 2003.[4] He was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Jewish Medical Center. In 2017, he was awarded Doctor habilitatus by Humboldt University in the field of biochemistry and molecular parasitology.[5][6]

Career and research[edit]

Nishith Gupta's research focuses on metabolic interactions between intracellular parasites and host cells.[7][8][9][10] Gupta's contributions have advanced the understanding of signal transduction in apicomplexan parasites, with potential implications in infectious disease medicine and biotherapeutics.[11][12]

Throughout his career, Gupta has held leadership positions, including the Heisenberg Group leader at the Humboldt University[13][14] and Senior Fellow of the Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance.[15] He is currently serving as the editorial board member of Communications Biology published by Nature Portfolio.[16]

Awards and recognition[edit]

In 2014, Nishith Gupta received with the Karl Asmund Rudolphi Medal, am award from the German Society for Parasitology.[17] In 2015, he received the young scientist award in Microbiology from the Robert Koch Foundation.[18][19]
