List of cases of law enforcement brutality in Pakistan
Below is a compilation of significant instances of law enforcement brutality, including police misconduct (Urdu: پولیس گردی ; Devanagari: पुलिसगर्दी ) in Pakistan.
- 1960 – Communist leader Hassan Nasir was killed during an interrogation at Lahore Fort.[1]
- 1980 – Nazeer Abbasi, another communist leader, was among many who lost their lives while being interrogated during the martial law imposed by Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.[1]
- 2010 – During protests organized by the Hazara Province Movement in Abbottabad, several protesters were shot and killed, with dozens more injured by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police.
- 2011 – In the Kharotabad incident, five Russians and one Tajik were shot dead by the Frontier Corps and police after being mistakenly identified as suicide bombers as they approached a border checkpoint. Dr. Baqir Shah, a police surgeon who provided testimony against the police, was later attacked in a restaurant in Quetta and subsequently murdered by unidentified gunmen.[2][3]
- 2014 – In Lahore, Punjab Police opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and injuring hundreds more.
- 2015 – Two brothers, Zeshan and Shakeel, were killed by police gunfire near the Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi. Reports indicate that they were shot multiple times after not stopping at a police checkpoint. One brother died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries later in the hospital. Both were unarmed.[4][5][6]
- 2018 – Naqeebullah Mehsud was fatally shot by Rao Anwar, a Senior Superintendent of the Karachi Police, during what was termed an encounter killing.
- 2019 – A family was killed by the Counter Terrorism Department in Sahiwal during another encounter killing.
- 2021 – Usama Nadeem, a 22-year-old university student, was shot multiple times by police after failing to stop.[7] His father remarked: "My son was shot multiple times. The anti-terror squad blatantly committed terrorism by targeting the windscreen instead of the tires."[8]
