Summary

DescriptionWounded Swedish ONUC soldier.jpg
English: Original description at the Department of Military History, Swedish Armed Forces Staff College:

"At Battalion X, a train escort from the 2nd Company, January 1961. En route from Elisabethville to Kamina, the escort was subjected to repeated ambushes by Baluba fighters. The railway tracks had been torn up and the power lines dismantled in several locations. During the first ambush — one kilometer south of Bukama on the morning of Sunday, 15 January — two Swedish majors (Kurt Skoog and Eric Bonde) were wounded, and one Belgian was killed. Later that day, a conscript (Lennart Lundgren) was also injured. An unknown number of Baluba fighters were killed or wounded. The escort continued from Luena on 17 January but had to return after an ambush by approximately 600 Balubas. The Swedes then dug in and prepared for defense.

The photo was taken during the firefight. On the stretcher is Major Skoog, wounded by gunfire."
