Wie sieht Hitler aus?

Adolf Hitler läßt sich nie abbilden. Bei meinem Aufenthalt in Berlin wurde ich mit Fragen über sein Aussehen bestürmt.

  • „Ist es wahr, dass er in der Öffentlichkeit nur mit einer schwarzen Gesichtsmaske erscheint?“
  • „Das Charakteristischste seines Gesichtes sind doch wohl die faszinierenden Augen?“
  • „Oder ist der Mund die Hauptsache?“
  • „Oder die Nase?“
  • „Trägt er vielleicht einen wallenden Bart wie Wotan oder wie Rabindranath Tagore?“
  • „Er hört die leisesten Äußerungen der Volksstimme; sind nicht seine Ohren besonders entwickelt?“
  • „Verrät etwa die untere Gesichtshälfte seine fabelhafte Energie?“
  • „Oder finden die ungeheuren geistigen Fähigkeiten ihren Ausdruck in fast hypertrophischen Schädelformen?“
  • „Ist er fett?“
  • „Ist er mager?“
  • „Ist er schön?“
  • Die Fragen mußten unbeantwortet bleiben. Hitler ist überhaupt kein Individuum. Er ist ein Zustand. Nur die Futurist kann ihn bildlich darstellen.
English: At the beginning of his political career in Munich, Hitler refused to let himself be photographed. Going only by his reputation, the satirical magazine Simplicissimus printed this gallery of speculative portraits, by Thomas Theodor Heine—very possibly the first artist to satirise the politician.

What does Hitler look like?

Adolf Hitler never allows himself to be depicted. During my stay in Berlin I was beset with questions about his appearance.

  • "Is it true that he appears in public only with a black mask upon his face?"
  • "Surely the most characteristic feature of his face is the bewitching eyes?"
  • "Or is the mouth the chief thing?"
  • "Or the nose?"
  • "He hears the faintest utterances of the vox populi; are not his ears peculiarly developed?"
  • "Does the lower half of his face betray his fabulous energy?"
  • "Or do his immense intellectual powers find expression in almost hypertrophic cranial forms?"
  • "Is he fat?"
  • "Is he thin?"
  • "Is he handsome?"
  • The questions had to remain unanswered. Hitler is no individual at all. He is a condition. Only the futurist can depict him.
