Built by the Muttaraiyar chiefs under the early Cholas in the 9th century, the temple is a fine example of early Dravidian rock-cut architecture. The site also houses an 8th-century Jaina abode, reflecting the region's religious diversity and rich cultural history. Its unique architectural features and historical significance make it an important monument in South Indian heritage.
