Summary

Description
English: The Brihajjataka is one of six major works of Varahamihira (the most famous of his works is Brihat Samhita). It was published in early 6th-century. The text relates to astronomy and zodiacs. According to scholars such as Moriz Winternitz, it was possibly Varahamihira who after learning the Greek language introduced and helped diffuse the Greek zodiac signs, names, and astrology. His works were copied and preserved in many parts of the Indian subcontinent, including Nepal where the above manuscript was rediscovered in the 19th-century. This version of the manuscript is incomplete and has many copying errors. It is now preserved at the Cambridge University Library as identification number MS Add.2834. The photo above is of a 2D artwork from a palm leaf manuscript that was copied in 1399 CE, purchased by Cecil Bendall in 1887. The copyrights of the 6th-century original text, and the copy have long expired. The photography is covered by Wikimedia Commons PD-Art licensing guidelines.
