Sculptures at Udayagiri illustrate in an interesting way the similarities and differences between the early style of Kalinga (ancient Orissa, in East India) and the contemporaneous art of Sanchi in the Deccan. The carving shown here is from the facade of the upper level of Cave 1, located in the space between two arches over the monks' cells. Similarities, as seen here, include the women's headdresses; the men's turbans; the large, square earrings worn by both sexes; and many other details of style and costume. |
