English: A group of Thugs about to strangle a traveller on a highway in India in the early 19th century. Two or three members of the group are distracting the traveller by pointing to something in the sky, while another member approaches the traveller from behind with a ligature in his hands.

According to Dash (2005: pp.168-169), it was drawn by an Indian artist in Lucknow in 1837, based on Thug testimony. The illustration is from Captain James Paton's manuscript Collections on Thuggee and Dacoitee, which was never published (Wagner, 2012: p.143).
