Summary
| DescriptionParagomphus lineatus male 3 by kadavoor.jpg |
English: Paragomphus is a genus of dragonfly in family Gomphidae. They are commonly known as Hooktails.
Lined Hooktail (Paragomphus lineatus) is a yellow dragonfly with black and brown markings, and bluish grey eyes. Yellow with a brown “X” shaped and an oblique mark on the back of the thorax. Sides of the thorax have three parallel brown stripes. Eighth and ninth segments have lateral oar like expansions. Commonly found near streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. All insect males have their genital opening for sperm at the ninth abdominal segment. Dragonflies and Damselflies are unique in the insect world in that the male possess a set of secondary sexual organs on the 2nd abdominal segments as well as his primary sexual apparatus on the 9th segment at the end of his abdomen. Before copulation, the male has to transfer sperm from the primary to the secondary genitalia. So the male prepares for mating by bending his abdomen downward and forward to form a circle and transfers sperm from the tip of his abdomen to a small pouch at the base of the secondary genitalia. In essence, the male has to inseminate himself before he can even begin the action of inseminating a female. Taken at Kadavoor, Kerala, India. |
