DescriptionNaga-enthroned Buddha - Beyond Angkor - Cleveland Museum of Art (40887945882).jpg
Naga-enthroned Buddha.
Bronze, about 1100 AD.
Banteay Chhmar, Cambodia
The Buddha represents the union of compassion and wisdom. The naga represents the Khmer people of Cambodia.
The Buddha enthroned on the naga was often a representation of the king. But this Buddha is crowned and bejeweled. In his hands, he holds a conical mound of rice. This indicates that this is more than a representation of a king; this is a Buddha who will ensure the prosperity of the land.
