English: KAMBAR-MEDU, MELAIYUR This Archaeological site, also known as ‘Kambar-medu’, has cultural sequence dating back to the Iron Age, Early Historic and Historic periods. Excavations were carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in the year 1982–84 CE. The excavations revealed that the ceramics of Black-and-Red ware, Red ware and few Graffiti marks of Iron Age and Early Historic period. Terracotta figurines such as a broken figure of Ganesha, headless female and a male torso were significant. Coins, bangles, beads and ear-ornaments, brick structures and a large number of tiles of Historic period were collected from the excavations. A soakage pit of mediaeval period with three courses of rings kept one above the other was another noteworthy feature noticed in the excavations.
