Description

Northeast India is very rich in biodiversity and is a part of mega biodiversity hotspots in the world. However, these vast natural resources including forests are in continuous threat from anthropogenic activities and natural calamities. This picture was taken from Nokrek Biosphere Reserve in Meghalaya (India) during 2004. Traditional slush-and-burn agriculture, locally known as Jhum cultivation, is very common among the tribal forest dwelling population in Northeast India. The reduction in biosphere is sometimes high, as visible in this picture.
