English: The Jewish cemetery in Chennai with tombstones of Paradesi Jews. This is the tombstone of Isaac Abendana Sardo (circa 1662
date QS:P,+1662-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1480,Q5727902
– 10 May 1709) who was a Dutch Jewish jeweller and diamond merchant of Madras, India. Originally from Holland, Abendana moved to India in 1702. Due to his skill in the trade, Abendana was widely consulted, including by most Madras trading companies and by his close friend, Thomas Pitt, the governor of Fort St. George. The writeup on the tombstone is "Here lies the body of Isᴀᴀᴄ Aʙᴇɴᴅᴀɴᴀ Sᴀʀᴅᴏ of Madras, Hebrew merchant, who died the 10th of May anno 1709, in the 49th year of his age".
I'm deeply grateful to a remarkable chain of individuals who made this visit possible. It began with a kind, unnamed Jewish person at Hyderabad airport, and continued through Rabbi Shneor Kupchik, his son, Mr. Robin S., David Levi, and Mrs. Kumari. Finally, Mr. Navjeet Suri's Tamil communication with Mrs. Kumari secured the gate opening. Without any one of these seven people, we wouldn't have these photos.
