Summary
| Description | A very Happy Vishu to my Malayalee friends! Vishu is the first day of the Malayalm Calendar falling on the 14th of April, the day after Bishakhi in Punjab.Flowers of the Indian Laburnum, Amaltas or the Golden Shower Tree (Cassia fistula) represent the spirit of Vishu more than anything else. Apart from the fact that these trees start flowering around the New Year, the yellow golden shower is supposed to represent prosperity and happiness. Traditionally Malayalees (People of Kerala who speak Malayalam) wake up on Vishu morning and open their eyes only once they reach the decorated room full of the flowers of this tree, gold, golden grain, pictures of Gods, etc. What a fine way to start a New Year! The Kerala New Year also coincides with the New Year of Assam called "Bihu", the colourful Rongali Bihu famous for the Bihu dances and festivities! |
