Summary
| DescriptionGuru Angad drawing from early 19th century.jpg |
English: Drawing of Guru Angad from the early 19th century. Guru Angad was the second guru of the Sikhs. "A drawing of the Sikh Guru Angad Ji, Pahari, India, early 19th century, opaque pigments and ink on paper, depicted seated facing left, with a bound manuscript and inkwell (divit) before him, a dagger (kard) at his waist, mounted, painting 20 x 15cm." (Roseberry art auction website description of piece). The Guru is depicted with a naturally sparse beard, similar to another historical fresco artwork of the Guru located at Baoli Sahib, Goindval.
Roseberys: Date: WEDNESDAY 17 JUNE 2020 Price Realised: £338 Estimate: £500 - £700 LOT 80 Description: A drawing of the Sikh Guru Angad Ji, Pahari, India, early 19th century, opaque pigments and ink on paper, depicted seated facing left, with a bound manuscript and inkwell (divit) before him, a dagger (kard) at his waist, mounted, painting 20 x 15cm. Theory: The auction-house selling this painting connected it to Guru Angad Dev Ji without any evidence to generate interest in the work and increase the potential sale-price. It does not resemble any known artwork of Guru Angad. Unless there is a reason they interpreted the depicted in the painting as being of Guru Angad (such as an inscription or whatnot), then the claim it depicts Guru Angad can be taken as spurious and unreliable, without authentication. |
