Summary
| DescriptionGaniyari Shiva temple Chhattisgarh Oct 2022 - 15.jpg |
English: The Ganiyari Shiva temple is an 11th to 12th century stone temple in northwest Chhattisgarh. It faces east, stands on a platform and is on the banks of a manmade small lake. The temple likely was larger, but everything except the antarala and sanctum were lost in later centuries. The temple has been restored and sections of it have integrated ruined temple parts into the wall particularly on the south side. The sikhara was torn down at some point in its history.
The best remnants of mutilated artwork is found on the north side and the sanctum's doorway. These include dancing Ganesha, Vishnu Varaha, Durga, Ganga, Yamuna, Navgrahas and others. The extant temple sanctum has both Ganesha and Shiva linga consecrated and in active worship. The lintel above sanctum entrance is also damaged but appear to be Saraswati and dancing Ganesha on the sides, while the center figure is unclear. The temple iconography is of Kalchuri style. |
