Remastered from Alfred von Domaszewski Geschichte der Romischen Kaiser Verlag von Quelle & Meyer in Leipzig 1914. Patricia Southern, in her work Augustus, Roman Imperial Biographies (second ed.), London and New York: Routledge, 2014, (ISBN 978-0-415-62838-9), page 24, Patricia Southern describes the bust as follows for Figure 1.3: "Idealised portrait bust of the young Gaius Octavius as a teenager. It was probably produced when he was much older, or possibly even after his death. Source: Courtesy Vatican Museums." Southern 2014: p. 24 also provides a description in the prose text: "In the meantime, in Rome, Octavius assumed the toga virilis on 18 October, at the age of 15. An idealised portrait of him as a youth gives some idea of his appearance at around this age." The portrait is now housed in the Vatican Museums, Pius-Clementine Museum, Gallery of the Busts, 123 (Roma, Musei Vaticani, Museo Pio-Clementino, Sala dei busti). |
