English: Chamba is an ancient trading and monastery hub at the confluence of Ravi and Sal rivers. The earliest Hindu Sanskrit manuscripts that mention it are from the 4th-century.

The historic name of this early Hindu capital in the Himalayas was Champaka, likely from the abundant Champaka flowering trees in its river valley with fragrant saffron-yellow flowers and a wood popular for building temples and homes. Over time the Champaka town came to be called Chamba.

In the modern era, Chamba has emerged as a major pilgrimage, education center, trading and tourist hub in north Himachal Pradesh.

The Chamba of Himachal Pradesh should not be confused with Chambal river and Chambal sites of Madhya Pradesh.
