Summary
| DescriptionAyutthaya City Plan Sketch Kaempfer 1690.png |
English: Engelbert Kaempfer's City Plan of Ayutthaya (sketch) during King Phetracha's reign (1688-1703). Kaempfer (1651–1716) was a German doctor who worked for the Dutch United East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC). On 7 June 1690, his ship entered the Chao Phraya River, and it arrived in Ayutthaya three days later. On 4 July, he left the Siamese capital towards Japan. The sketch map shows the capital city on the island with locations of roads, canals, and various places such as the Grand Palace, the Front Palace, the Rear Palace, the city walls, and forts, as well as the length of roads and city walls in various sections. It has various notes in a mixed language of German, Dutch Company jargon and Latin, but they are of limited use as a map legend.
