The Standard Motor Company was established in the UK in 1903 producing cars and the Ferguson tractor. It purchased Triumph in 1945, from 1959-63 was known as Standard Triumph. Purchased by Leyland Motors in 1960, which became British Leyland in 1968. Standard Cars were also built in Australia by Eclipse Motors of Melbourne from CKD kits. By the end of the War, the Standard 8, Vanguard, Spacemaster and the Triumph Mayflower were built there. Eclipse Motors became the Standard Motor Company in 1952 and from 1958; Australian Motor Industries (AMI) The new Phase III Vanguard was built from 1956-61. Available in Saloon, Wagon and in Australia, a Utility. 1956; solid bar through the grille, the base model in Australia was the Spacemaster, in the UK; the Ensign with a mesh grille. An upmarket model was available, the Sportsman with tuned 90hp engine from the Triumph TR3 and a squarer grille like an MG . 1957; Australian Vanguards got an update; a mesh grille like the Ensign and fins on the rear qtrs. 1958; Instead of a Phase IV, the next model was the Vignale, new grille, horizontal chrome bars, more complex stainless steel side strips, two tone paint. In 1960, shepherds crook shape stainless steel side strips . In 1961, the 6 cyl introduced, with Six badge on the bonnet In 1963, stainless steel strip now continues right to the front of the guard, Vanguard letters spread right out on the bonnet.
