Summary
| Description0112421 Bheem Gaja, Garuda stambha of Pathari Madhya Pradesh 004.jpg |
English: The Bheemgaja, also referred to as Bhim Gaja or Garuda Dhwaja of Pathari, literally means "Bheem's lath" or "the rod of Bhima" referring to the Bhima of the Mahabharata fame. However, this modern era local name is for a pillar that actually is a Garuda stambha.
The Bheem Gaja is about 2,5 feet in diameter and 36 feet tall, with a 38 line Hindu inscription with fine calligraphy. The bottom of the pillar has a octagonal cross section, and circular for much of the top. Above the pillar is an amalaka. According to the inscription dated c. 861 CE (vikram samvat 917), this Garuda stambha was installed for Vishnu (Shauri/Hari) by the Rashtrakuta kind Parabala. This is further corroborated by an east facing Vishnu temple, now outside the compound, 75 feet to the west of this pillar and across the road. It has Vishnu on the lalatabimba. This temple was reclaimed by Hindus after the Mughal Empire collapsed and it now has a Shiva linga inside. |
