| Description0051923 Mahasu Devta temple, Hanol Uttarakhand 003.jpg |
English: The Mahasu Devta temple in Hanol is among the most prominent of Mahasu Devta temples found in western Uttarakhand and southeastern Himachal Pradesh. The temple at Hanol is the oldest known site of the Jaunsari religious tradition. Jaunsars are a protected tribal group with distinct folklores and culture who also celebrate some of the festivals and traditions of Hinduism.
The Mahasu Devta temple in Hanol is located on the Tons river banks in Dehradun district. The temple is dedicated to four godly brothers—Pavasik, Botha, Vasik, and Chalda, who are revered as the spiritual kings and the Mahasu Devta. The temple has a notable Kath–Koni architecture (kothi, castle). Built from stone and wood, the site hosts festivals, fairs and community events. The temple in Hanol is one of many Mahasu Devta temples found in a region near the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Inside these temples are Pahari-style miniature paintings. The painted scenes include legends unique within Jaunsari tradition, as well as scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The temple is an Archaeological Survey of India protected national monument. |
