Faculty of Architecture and Planning (FoAP) is a constituent faculty of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.[1] Established in 1911 as a department of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow, it is among the oldest institutions for architectural education in India.[1]
The faculty offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in architecture and planning, including Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), Master of Planning (M.Plan.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programmes.[2][3][4]

Architectural education at the institution began in 1911 as a department within the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow.[1]
In 1976, the department was reorganised as the Government School of Architecture.[1] In 1980, it became the Government College of Architecture, Lucknow and functioned as a constituent college of the University of Lucknow.[1]
During the academic session 2000–01, the college was transferred to the newly established Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU).[1][5]
In 2010, UPTU was divided into Gautam Buddha Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University.[6] The two institutions were merged again in 2013.[7]
In 2015, the university was renamed Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University after former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.[8]

The faculty offers programmes in architecture and planning at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.[2][3][4]
Its academic offerings include the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), Master of Planning (M.Plan.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).[2][3][4]
The programmes are approved by the Council of Architecture.[9]

The faculty conducts research in architecture, planning, heritage conservation, environmental design and sustainable development through doctoral studies and sponsored research projects.[4][10]
The Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems (DHAROHAR) supports research related to architectural heritage and indigenous knowledge systems.[11]

The faculty is located on a six-acre campus in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.[1]
Rankings[edit | edit source]
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, the faculty was ranked 39th among architecture institutions in India.[12]
The faculty has also appeared in national rankings published by India Today and Outlook–ICARE.[13][14]
Accreditation[edit | edit source]
The academic programmes of the faculty are approved by the Council of Architecture and operate under the academic framework of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University.[9]
As a constituent faculty of AKTU, it is covered under the university's accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[15][16]
