LineageOS is an open-source operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), designed for smartphones, tablets, and set-top boxes. Developed and maintained by a global community of contributors, it serves as the successor to CyanogenMod, from which it was officially forked in December 2016. As of 2025, approximately 4.5 million devices worldwide run LineageOS.

The origins of LineageOS trace back to CyanogenMod, which was created in 2009 by Stefanie Jane (Cyanogen). In 2013, Jane established Cyanogen Inc. to commercialise the project, securing venture funding. However, by 2016, internal restructuring—including leadership changes, office closures, and the discontinuation of certain services—led to Jane either leaving or being removed from the company.
Following these developments, the LineageOS project was established as an independent fork of CyanogenMod. It was officially launched on 24 December 2016, with the name "LineageOS" adopted after Cyanogen Inc. retained the rights to the original "Cyanogen" trademark.
