Controversies[edit | edit source]

Shooter film ban[edit | edit source]

In February 2020, the Punjab government banned the Punjabi film Shooter, which was based on the life of gangster Sukha Kahlwan. The state government said that the film promoted violence and gangster culture. Following the ban, police registered a first information report (FIR) against Dhillon and other people associated with the film under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to promoting enmity and public mischief.[11][12]

Dhillon challenged the ban in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In February 2020, he withdrew his petition after the relevant government notification was unavailable during the proceedings, with liberty to approach the court again after obtaining the notification.[13]

The film subsequently received a theatrical release date in December 2021 and was released on 4 February 2022. Dhillon said that he was pleased that the film had been permitted to be screened and argued that its trailer should not be used as the sole basis for judging its content.[14]

Copyright-related case[edit | edit source]

In January 2022, Hindustan Times reported that a lyricist, Simran Goraya, had complained to the police that the song "Shoot Da Order", which he had written, had been sold to Dhillon's music company without his consent. According to the complaint, the owners of Vardhman Music Company had initially assured Goraya that he would receive a 50% share of the earnings before allegedly selling the song to Dhillon, after which it was used in a film. Police registered a case involving allegations of cheating, criminal conspiracy and violations of the Copyright Act.[15]

In 2023, Dhillon approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking the quashing of an FIR relating to the dispute, relying on a compromise between the parties. The court record noted that the parties had recorded their statements concerning the compromise. The available judgment text contains inconsistencies between the FIR identified in the petition and the FIR referred to in the final operative paragraph; the precise scope of the final order should therefore be checked against the official court record before stating that the copyright-related proceedings were quashed.[16]

Reported death threats[edit | edit source]

In November 2024, media outlets reported that Dhillon had received death threats in an audio recording attributed to Janta Kharar, described in the reports as an associate of gangster Arsh Dalla. The recording reportedly warned singers associated with Geet MP3 against continuing to work with Dhillon and referred to the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. The statements in the recording included allegations against Geet MP3, but these allegations were reported as claims made by the person issuing the threat and should not be treated as established findings of wrongdoing.[17][18]
