Mughal, India, late 17th Century

Opaque pigment on paper heightened with gold, inscribed in Devanagari on reverse. The portrait depicts Mirza Rustam Safavi of Kandahar as an old man with a white beard, wearing a cream jama, with a gold-leaf design. He clasps the hilt of a golden dagger which is tucked into a green and golden sash tied at his waist, his sword and shield hang at his side. He stands in a plain open landscape with a few flowering plants dotted around his feet.
