Basirhat College, established in 1947,[1] is a general degree college in Basirhat. It offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce and sciences. It is affiliated to West Bengal State University.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Basirhat College was founded in mid-November 1947 on the banks of river Icchamati.[3] In 1947, the college was primarily housed in Basirhat Town Hall. It later moved to the residence of Khan Bahadur A.F.M. Abdur Rahaman in Basirhat. Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee laid the foundation stone at the present location of the college[citation needed].

Initially, there was one Faculty – Arts (Humanities) with 6 departments. Over time, the total number of departments increased to 16 departments. Two new departments, - Geography and Education were approved by the University of Calcutta & State Government in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Basirhat College runs in three shifts, - morning, day and evening. Students come from a variety of local towns and villages[citation needed].

Basirhat College offers bachelor's degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce. It has also built a computer lab and by introducing automation software[citation needed].

Basirhat College runs three sections; morning, day and evening. The morning section offers to study the General Courses in Arts subjects and Honours Course in Bengali only. The day section offers honours and general courses in Arts and Science (Pure and Biological). The evening section offers only honours and general commerce[citation needed].

Basirhat College offers both honours and general Courses of study in Science, Arts and Commerce.

Honours and general courses in pure science are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Economics. In biological sciences, Zoology, Botany, and Physiology are offered at the honours and general level. In Arts, honours and general courses are offered in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Geography, Education, and Sanskrit. The Commerce faculty offers honours general courses in course in Economics and Accountancy. [citation needed]

Basirhat College is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the institution is awarded 'B' grade by NAAC.[1][5]
